Church Leadership
Faithful officers called to shepherd, serve, and uphold the mission of Christ’s Church.
In accordance with the Presbyterian Church in America's Book of Church Order, the government of Christ’s Church is administered through ordained officers who are called, examined, and set apart for service. These officers—teaching elders, ruling elders, and deacons—are not self-appointed, but are recognized by the congregation and ordained by the appropriate court of the Church. BCO 1-6
The officers of the Church, by whom all its powers are administered, are, according to the Scriptures, teaching elders (also known as ministers of the Word), ruling elders, and deacons. BCO 1-4
These offices are not merely functional roles but are divinely instituted for the edification of the body of Christ and the faithful execution of its mission. Teaching elders are primarily responsible for preaching, administering the sacraments, and shepherding the flock through the ministry of the Word. ,
Ruling elders share in the spiritual oversight of the congregation, exercising leadership, governance, and pastoral care. ,
Deacons are entrusted with ministries of mercy and stewardship, caring for the physical and material needs of the church and its members. ,
Ordination is the solemn setting apart of individuals to these offices, ordinarily conducted by a court of the Church. This process affirms both the inward call of the Holy Spirit and the outward confirmation by the body of Christ. ,
Through this structure, the Church maintains both order and accountability, ensuring that its officers serve not by personal authority, but under the authority of Christ and His Word.
At Bethel Presbyterian Church, we give thanks for the men who have been called to serve as elders and deacons. Their leadership reflects a commitment to biblical fidelity, spiritual maturity, and humble service. We invite you to learn more about those who serve in these roles and to pray for them as they shepherd and serve our congregation.
