Discussion Questions — August 2026
August 16, 2026 — Exodus 3:15-22
1. Give some “big picture” observations and perspectives on the passage.
2. What are the two parts of God’s message to us?
3. How would we define / explain God’s name?
4. What are some of God’s works? What is His most important work, as it relates to His relationship with us?
5. What is the first use of the word “elders” in Scripture? To whom does it refer? What present-day common word might we use to define the Gen 50 usage?
6. Who can be influencers in the church? How can they use their influence for good, in the church?
7. What is the elder’s role in the church in using the Word of God with the people?
8. What responses should church members have in response to the elder’s rightly used “influence”?
9. What possible responses will we see from non-believers?
10. What do we learn from the verb tenses in vv. 20-22, as it relates to when God’s Word will be proven true, as compared to our obedience now?
August 9, 2026 — Nehemiah 2:22-37
1. What particularly stood out to you from this sermon? Was anything significantly reassuring or challenging? What is your favorite verse from this passage? Why?
2. When you hear the word ‘revival,’ what comes to mind? Do you think the visible church in America needs revival? Why/why not?
3. Read Nehemiah 9:22-25. How has the Lord demonstrated His goodness to you? What specific things did the Levites mention in their prayer about God’s goodness to the people of Israel?
4. How should we respond to God’s goodness? How do you normally respond to the Lord’s many blessings?
5. How should our prayers to the Lord begin? Why? What is the second thing our prayers should focus on? How come?
6. Read Nehemiah 9:26-31. How has the Lord demonstrated His patience with you? How did He demonstrate it with the Jews throughout their history? Does this surprise you? Why/why not?
7. What had Israel done to ensure they weren’t confronted with their failures (see verse 26, if you are struggling)? What downward pattern marked life in the covenant community during the time of the Judges?
8. Why did God command Hosea to marry an unfaithful woman? Read Hosea 11:8-9. Despite their repeated unfaithfulness, how does God deal with His children? How does understanding this make you feel? Why?
9. Read Nehemiah 9:32-37. How has the Lord demonstrated His faithfulness to you and your loved ones? To the Bethel congregation? To the Jewish people?
10. If you are struggling in your Christian walk, what are some things you can do to return to the Lord? How does hearing that God is just cause you to respond? Why?
11. Did the Lord desert His people when they acted wickedly? Why/why not? Read 2 Chronicles 7:14. Who does this passage apply to? What does God promise if we respond appropriately?
12. Spend some time praying for the needs of our family, friends, group members, unsaved neighbors, and congregation.
August 9, 2026 — Nehemiah 9:22-37
1. What particularly stood out to you from this sermon? Was anything significantly reassuring or challenging? What is your favorite verse from this passage? Why?
2. Read Nehemiah 9:1-5. What month did this covenant renewal service take place during? What other Jewish feasts already took place during this month? What did those holidays celebrate?
3. What were the people wearing when they assembled for this event? Why were they dressed in this manner?
4. Besides their dress, what other steps had the people taken to prepare for this service? Why had they taken these steps?
5. According to verse 3, what activities did the community participate in during this service? How does the Westminster Shorter Catechism define sin? What are some areas where you are still tempted to break God’s commands?
6. Where does real change come from in our lives? What steps have you taken to learn the Word of God better? What else might you focus on to mature spiritually?
7. Read Nehemiah 9:6. What does this verse teach us about God? How should we respond to this information? How might we better reflect on the Lord and His nature more consistently?
8. Read Nehemiah 9:7-8. Where did God find Abram? In Genesis 12, what promise did God make to Abram? What did the ceremony described in Genesis 15 signify? What is the sign of the covenant given in Genesis 17?
9. Read Nehemiah 9:9-15. List the verbs God performed in this passage. What does this signify?
10. Read Nehemiah 9:16-21. In verses 16-17, how did the people respond to God’s deliverance during the Exodus? Why did they react like this? How can we keep from reacting similarly when God blesses us?
11. How did God respond to their rebellion? Why did He respond in this manner? What can we learn from this?
12. Spend some time praying for the needs of our family, friends, group members, unsaved neighbors, and congregation.
